WNSF American Cup - Mentor, OH - 08/28/2010

The alternative title was “Dr. Bananahands or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Piss in a Cup.” It’s kind of funny to me to see that the day after this show when I woke up; the first thing I read about is how what I did (by competing in this show) is “bad” for strongman and an ego trip. Awesome, I always wanted to be a bad guy wrestler so I guess a bad guy strongman works fine too. Competition is healthy.

This contest was in Ohio and would be the furthest I’ve gone for a contest clocking in at around five and a half hours or so. Rode out there the day before with Andy Deck and my dad. Not going to name names but his initials are Lou Costa, was also supposed to tag along but he went separately and ended up arriving at around 1:30 in the morning. Talked shop, bullocks and whatnot until we reached our destination. We ate at the restaurant sponsoring and holding the contest, the Quaker Steak & Lube. The fact it looks like a gas station is and has “lube” in the name is supposed to be a joke. Andy and I also think the steak part is also a joke. But damn do they have good chicken. I should have listened to the bellhop at the hotel and just got chicken. When a bellhop tells you things, you listen. That kind of thing saved Danny Torrance’s life in “The Shining” and I’m better for it. Most of my conversations revolved around how good that chicken was to other competitors or whoever was near by. I feel I should beat the owners up for not telling me how good that chicken was. But I digress. We walked around the parking lot and got a good idea of the possibly terrain we’d be pulling the fire truck and walking the yoke. I was still hungry after the restaurant and got two sandwiches at Sheetz and then had a shake and went to bed.

This whole week, I have been feeling this silent stress. I don’t think I’m thinking about it but my heart races and my hands get sweaty. Just waiting for the Great White Stress Shark to erupt and attack the Sea Lion of Confidence. I slept well though so maybe this wasn’t entirely the case. Or maybe I don’t care at this point. So I’m up and make it down to the show with my dad and Deck. I do my typical tourist thing of walking around and taking photos of the things I see. They had the Inch Dumbbell out and boy is that different than the thick handle dumbbells I’ve used. I could barely break it off the ground with one hand. John Dennis was able to pull it close to lockout before his grip gave out. Andy and I both noticed a large stack of tires and were a little concerned since no one has practiced tires in months. Turns out they were for an intermission thing for the crowd where they could try to flip the heaviest tire (970lbs) for a $50 gift certificate to the Quaker Steak & Lube. My stomach was considering dropping out and doing that so I could get 100 chicken wings but my brain tricked it back into doing the contest saying if I got at least third place, I could get 200 chicken wings and that’s like 100 more chicken wings. So we had the rules meeting and I weighed in at 263.6lbs (with my thick shoes on). While there were only four heavy weights (Scott Weech, Lou Costa, John Dennis and I) I was the lightest competitor of the heavies. We were told it was going to run fast so I got ready and warmed up. Something clicked once the DJ started blaring music and I did my warm ups with purpose.

To start the day off, it was a truck pull. We had to pull Phillip the Firetruck (actual name of the truck) for 80’ in 75 seconds. Andy and I noticed right away this was going to be a repeat of the Iron City pull in that the start was good but it went up hill halfway. The rope was 2” thick and it was heavy to pull and keep tight. I knew it was going to be tough after seeing John Dennis only get about half the distance when he had finished the truck pull at Iron City in the fastest time. Scott Weech went and got only slightly further. This is not going to be good. I chalked my hands and got into the Spud harness. I get tight and I hear Thunderstruck come on the loud speakers (personal songs by the DJ is freaking awesome) and I pulled. I was yelling the lyrics at the top of my lungs as I pulled. THUNDER! My forearms were burning and I just kept chugging along. THUNDER! Still going. THUNDER! It slows to a stop and I try to restart it but no good. Unlike the IronMind harness, the Spud ones don’t have good place to brace your abs for a restart mid pull. I was out of breath and looked over to see if I had beaten 42’9”. I saw my dad nod his head yes and saw the judges mouth “44 feet” and I thrust my fist up. I had successfully beat an ASC pro in an event and not only that, but an event that three months earlier, I sucked at. First out of four and a great way to start the day.

Up next was the Inch Dumbbell press. An actual replica coming in at 172lbs. Compared to the cartoonish looking circus dumbbells, it doesn’t look like much. But placing that bad boy on your shoulder feels like you just shouldered a baby elephant. It’s just so dense. Like none more dense. In warm ups, I was only able to get it with my right arm and that was after three sets so I knew this was going to be tough. I was up on this event literally minutes after the truck pull so my legs were pretty shot and bending over made the water and Gatorade think about evacuating. And not the good kind. Luckily since I was first on the truck pull, I got go last on this to see what I had to beat. Lou put up I believe eight reps which I figured might be doable if I was fresh and my overhead was at its best (which it wasn’t) and then John went and bombed. Of course Scott goes and makes an easy 11 reps. No way was I going to catch that. My goal at this point was to get at least one. One rep got me third place but I knew that’s not what the crowd would want so I kept going but took it slow and managed four reps. I wish I had a dumbbell like this to play around with in PA. At least we got a Slater 10” to play with at Jon’s place in York. So a third out of four.

Again, minutes later it was on to the car deadlift. It was set on a suspension thing so it was quite different than the two contests that have had a lever based deadlift. Honestly, this was the point in the contest (with car deadlift, log press and yoke) that I’d be left in the dust behind Lou and Scott. Our weight was going to be the car plus 200lbs in the trunk. That changed when Rob “All Day” Agnoli and Andy “Vibrams” Deck did 38 and 41 reps with the apparatus with 100lbs in the trunk. Their sacrifice was not in vain as John Dennis asked them to put the 200lbs on the handles as he didn’t want to do a “f***ing repfest.” The setup was a little awkward, especially for the larger guys with the plates. Lucky for me, I have no ass so the plates didn’t hit my tuckus if I was too close. John had got five reps and seeing as how this got tough right as you get to the point you have to push your hips through, I was worried this would be awful. That feeling of becoming a decorative cherub fountain spewing Gatorade? Amplified with the belts. I seriously thought I would vomit all over the head judge. I strapped in and pulled. After I got the first rep up, I adjusted my feet to a more optimal position and banged out some reps. I didn’t keep track. My left arm started spasming and my straps were coming loose. I couldn’t get my left arm to stop so I threw off my straps and pulled one last rep without them before time ran out. I finished with 11 reps which (Scott straight up murdered with 15 reps) was good enough for second out of four.

Thankfully, there was a 20 minute break. The first three events were done in about an hour. My upperback was destroyed, my grip was fried and my calves were cramping. The intermission was tire flipping and H2 pull. Both events were giving $50 gift certificates to Quaker Steak & Lube. Two people actually flipped all the tires so they came up with a “flip off” for the second intermission with reps on the 970lbs tire. First place would get $50 and the second place would get $25.

So after the rest break, it was on to the log press for max. Three attempts but with power lifting three attempt rules. I don’t think anyone really benefited from the rule of going after missing but whatever. The heavies were using a 13” log. Last time I used this kind of log was a year ago and I only got 240lbs. The darn thing weighed 245lbs empty so that became my opener. I rushed the clean but made the lift easy. Did a knee raise and put it down. Really I was trying any tricks to get my legs and triceps to kick in and allow me to be explosive. I called for 265lbs for my next attempt. Much better with the clean and a slightly tougher press. I held it overhead for a bit and walked forward with it before putting it down. Trying to get myself pumped for my last attempt. I knew that there was no way I could get a 20lbs increase so I just went for 275lbs. If I got this, I’d get third out right and if not, I’d tie with John. I gave it two tries but just wasn’t meant to be as I felt my core relax each time I went to get my leg drive. 13” logs are tough. I guess I can’t be miffed with a 25lbs PR on this lift but it’s tough to be happy with that when First place does 400lbs with some in the tank. Tie for last place out of four.

Then it was time for the yoke. Not much to say on this other than it was wobbly and had skateboard tape on the bar. No chance of that sliding down haha. I didn’t get a chance to warm up for it so it was bang, right under 800lbs. We had 75 seconds to go 80’. I totally and completely screwed up my start and made several drops. Man this event needs a lot of work. This wasn’t like at home where I could take some rest and make it a 3 minutes set. Every time I picked it up I’m thinking, go, go, go, finish, you have to finish, you just have to finish. I crossed the line just as time ran out. Really, really sad performance on this. Lou and Scott both made it look like a joke. I swear they run faster with weight than without it, makes them more aerodynamic of something. Fourth place out of four.

The final intermission (10 minutes) went and I got ready for the stone over bar. I was in third and needed to beat Lou to get second. But that wasn’t really on my mind. My goal was to beat Scott. Ever since he beat me by less than half a second on that stone series at Villanova, he’s been the guy I’ve been trying to beat. Before him it was Andy Deck as we would often tie or edge each other out by a few seconds on stones. Now Scott is my end game boss when it comes to stones. The event was a “375lbs” (more on that later) stone would be loaded over a 48” yoke with a time limit for this one was 75 seconds. With the listed weight, I was thinking, light stone. Hell, even before the contest I was thinking that the winning number would be double digits on this one. However, after the whole day of leg destroying events, I was thinking maybe five would be enough. I went first since I got last on yoke and I attacked. It didn’t budge. WHAT? I grab it again, it just slides. Now I’m made I get as tight as I can a lap it really, really deep. I don’t think I’ve ever got that deep to lap a stone. I extend and get it over. Balls. I try again and I try to lap it again and it rolls off my lap. I swear this thing was polished glass or something. I get some fresh tacky from Andy (I was using my old stuff) and managed to get one more rep (really freaking tough). Crap, I must be weak was my thinking and then both John and Lou bomb it. Scott comes up and gets two in a much faster time than me and pulls off the win with one more. If I had been using fresh tacky from the start, I could have got three but Scott would have done four. He was definitely the better and stronger stone loader today. A second out of four.

So we’re all talking around a trash can as we’re cleaning the tacky off our arms and all the heavies agree that the “375lbs” stone was much heavier than that. As all four of us have done +400lbs stones for reps and Scott said it was much tougher than the 410lbs stone he did in Orlando and that was over a 54” bar. It turns out that the weight was a guess as the scale they had only goes up to 330lbs and the stone has a lead insert (21” mold) and they asked Steve Slater how much it should weigh. There was a little kid that wanted to get his picture taken with us (Lou, Scott, Andy and I) but he was a little shy. But he came back a little later with his shirt off and did a “most muscular pose” for the camera. That had to be the highlight of the day for me haha. We cleaned up and they gave out the awards. I placed second behind Scott. Being top three meant I was invited to compete at the show in February/March where I could qualify to represent the USA at the WNSF championships. I thanked them and I got a big check made out for $200. I felt a little like Happy Gilmore with that thing haha.

Then came time to provide a “specimen” for the “test” haha. Oh sure, now they want my pee. Should have asked for it when I was nervous not when I’m dehydrated haha. I tried drinking a lot of water but it did no good but, it did come back to bite me a few hours into the trip home when I had to have my dad pull over so I could run into a ditch and piss from like three minutes straight. No idea how truckers do it into a bottle. I’m not sure if it was enough but oh well. Next time, I’ll provide a gallon of pee. Ok, back to the contest. So Andy and I talk with Bryce and the rest of the Gorilla Pit Crew and it appears that there will be a show there at the gym in November (date not yet set) that’s going to just be like a heavy, heavy training day type contest (top three qualify for the February/March show) that will have a DJ, beverages and be catered by Quaker Steak and Lube (CHICKEN!!!) which I’ll probably do too. Drove home and listened to comedy CD’s. Not much time to rest as my next show will be the Hudson Valley Strongman/ Masters Nationals in Wallkill, NY. Upstate New York shows are just the best.

I told you its name was Phillip.

Walking – 32 minutes

Comments: Went for a stroll a little later than I had planned. Leaving tomorrow with my dad, Andy and Lou for Mentor Ohio for the WNSF American Cup. May be only a few competitors in the HW class but it's going to be tough. I wouldn't be surprised with a last place finish overall here. Just got to go a do my thing.

Comments: Last hard workout before the contest. I felt like something must be off with the set of bands I was using as I had hit big PR's against it but saw very little go over to my reverse band or log press from the rack. I checked this particular set of bands and it turns out they were much weaker than my previous set. It was only 110lbs instead of 140lbs. So now it makes sense. That tension is too light so I went with the over setup that makes lockout tough (125lbs of tension) and I'll be using that for this cycling. Shoulders were pretty fatigued but made them all easy. Board pressing I wasn't sure how it would go. Turns out pretty good. Probably had at least one more, maybe two if I really gave it everything. I said screw it on incline and loaded the dumbbells up to 100lbs instead of 95lbs. Got eight reps the first set and blasted out nine the other two sets. Good. Moved up in weight on rear delt stuff and that was quite exhausting. Surprised that I didn't need much stretching after missing it for last tough workout. I did spend quite a bit of time stretching out my chest and lats. I am thinking what would be the best way to train for Nats with these two contests, whether I should deload for both or just this one and treat the next as a really tough events day. Anyway, one more gym workout and then done.

Comments: Not really much of a day really. I had wanted to do some light medleys to simulate events for Nats but Joe was having none of it. He wanted me to stay focused on this upcoming show. I personally like to deload from the contest at hand (keeps me from stressing out about it) by doing events for another show. This was kind of unfortunate as I had done most of the events coming up in the show already this week. Didn't feel like arguing and practiced yoke starts. Working on the pick, settling and then taking off with it. Felt alright, not too concerned about this event. Goal I guess is whole distance with no drops. Then since there wasn't much else I could do, I took the wood log (can't add weight to it) and did a clean and press drill. Three cleans and then strict press. That counts as one rep and I did two sets of four. I wanted to feel like I did something so I went for a walk when I got home after mowing the front yard. I also slapped together my training clips video for this show and the next one. Enjoy.

Comments: This was a breath of fresh air from my usual DE LB day with both yoke and farmers. Absolutely crushed every rep on the ssb box squats, even with the high band tension. Very short rest and just speed, speed, speed. Just how I like it. After last weeks event training with simulated car deadlifts, I decided to add them to my weekly events. Definitely noticing little tweaks that make all the difference with this lift. Even though my grip can easily hold on to this, I used straps to get used to strapping up (awkward with my straps on parallel grips) and pulling without the grip and rip style. Really pleased to improve by 50lbs on this in less than a week. Up next was belt squats. I haven't done them in a long while as the last time I had on a hard Spud belt and it pinched a nerve in my thigh and I pretty much slept the entire next day. So I was mindful of that this time. After using a reverse hyper a two weeks ago, I noticed how the traction felt and I figured having an exercise that deloads the spine would be a good idea. Especially if it works the legs. Today's workout session with this lift wasn't ideal as I don't have my Spud belt and I had forgotten my loading pin. So I had to use a belt, some chains and the 110lbs dumbbells to make do. Pain in the butt to set up but it worked. Felt quite the pump in my legs and lower back. It made dimels a bit tougher today. Had to rush through this and didn't have time to stretch. Two more lifting days and then deload for competition.

August 20, 2010

Walking – 30 minutes

Comments: Just walking today after work today. Meant to do it earlier when I got home but that ended up as a half hour nap. On the couch. In the basement. Still quite warm outside even at 9:00. So I did some more thinking on the whole overhead thing. My first plan is going to be a simple switch of overhead days to bench days so that heavy overhead lifts are done the same week as my heavy deadlifts instead of heavy squats. I actually looked back through my journey as I knew I was experiencing a similar issue. The pattern was huge PR on a squat (box or free style) without bands and then and lackadaisical or sucky overhead max workout. Even seeing the same thing happen with the DE days too. So hopefully this switch will fix things. If not, I guess the next option is to alternate between heavy and speed for upperbody. I may cut down on the variations of lifts with bands and do some more straight weight stuff using a barbell and my hollow thick bar. Anyway, the entry form and events for Nationals was posted today. I was kind of writing off the contest for this year as it's in Reno, Nevada, the past two years and all the other Pro qualifiers have had heavy log pressing (weakest event) and the general genericness of the events. Well imagine my surprise to see no log and only some of the typically generic fodder (got to get that ironmind sandbag in there somewhere). I'm sure some of my friends will think that some of the events are light (yoke, frame, axle) considering how the other Plat Pluses were much heavier (yoke especially). Eh, it's not a must but it could be something to train for between September and January for me. Cost is going to be the biggest thing and I'll have to determine what that's going to end up being.

Comments: My plan was to lift and if my back started to bother me, shut it down. Back didn't act up (it only does in certain positions I guess) so I went at it. Very very disappointed with how log pressing went. 190lbs and above felt like a ton. Just awful. I'm getting stronger everywhere but here and I'm thinking it may be due to one of two things. I could be doing too much for upperbody now with all the pressing but that seems unlikely as on DE day, the log felt light on even the 270lbs cleans. So the other idea is that my lower body squat based workouts are becoming too taxing to get enough leg drive for my overhead lifts. So I'll be switching them to the weeks I do deadlifts. See how that works. So at the time, still pissed off and went to do a new exercise, double overhand axle power shrugs. I started really light and found it quite easy so instead of doing 30lbs jumps as planned, I just went plate, quarter, plate. Surprised to work up to 375lbs. Still pissed with log pressing and upped the weight considerably for bench rows. Failed to get the reps, really freaking tough. I wasn't done with my log press anger so I increased the pressdowns a lot too. Actually got all the reps. Stretching and resting tomorrow. Hoping that this back thing goes away completely before the show.

Comments: Really good workout lifting wise, not so much injury wise haha. Squats felt real good warming up as 285lbs went up like it was a free squat. However, something happened on the set with 375lbs in the hole. I felt something move in the lower left side of my back/oblique. Certain positions after that were painful. Not sure what it is but it feels muscle related and not nerve or joints. I continued lifting as at this point, if it wasn't feeling or getting worse as the workout went on, I might as well finish up and recovery at home. Went on to absolutely crush my previous PR's. I was good for more on my max single I think but the down set was definitely my max. Next was rack suspended sumo goodmornings. I haven't done these in a long time. Looking at the video, they do seem high but these were the height I was using a few years ago so I stuck with it. Crazy to see how much my hamstring and back strength has improved since then. I know I'm getting better as a lifter as I'm able to make adjustments mid lift and focus. For squats, I really focused on keeping my abs tight. For these, I really concentrated on pushing with the heels to murder the hamstrings and launch through with the hips. Finished up with hypers (easy) and abs (not as easy) and stretched. Going to put Icy-Hot on this sore area and take anti-inflammatories. Hoping sleep and a hot shower or two will make things more bearable. I'd hate to have a serious injury this close to a competition. Just going to have to play it by ear.

Comments: Had the opportunity to lift today but decided it was smarter to get used to my new schedule (let the biceps rest haha). I had thought my new class started this week but it's next week so this was a planned day off. Went walking at night after dinner. Pretty much got all the details ironed out in my plan of attack.

Comments: Changed things up for today. I went back to the high band tension, low bar weight (but increasing) approach to my speed work. Everything felt awesome. Other than my biceps and forearms being tight from the day before (darn you dumbbell) log cleans were crisp and explosive. Good for a few more. Finally got 12 reps on incline and got it for the other two sets as well. Woot. Finished up with raises (increasing the weight next time) and a lot of stretching. Going to be sore tomorrow.

Comments: After yesterday, it took quite a bit to get me out of bed this morning. I swear I hit the snooze button at least four times. I begrudgingly got ready and tried to stay positive, singing along to the songs on my ipod. Around half way there, it started to rain so that kind of got rid of two of my event ideas for today (sled drag and arm over arm). Doing thick handle dumbbell was a smart/stupid idea. I knew that going for 20 reps with 140lbs was going to be a massive amount of hurt, especially after how winded I got doing the same with 110lbs. I'm certain the equation for it is "awful" + "stupid" = "suck" but then again, not so good with the math. 2.5 minutes later I finish. Urgh. My upper torso was just a delta of sweat. Bending over made me feel like blowing chunks. Managed to keep my breakfast down (2lbs of yogurt and a cup of coffee). Next up was a new exercise for us, a simulated car deadlift. Two barbells anchored to the wall and loading up the other ends and lift. Feels pretty darn close. Weight doesn't matter as the leverage is the point and when it gets tough, that's a good working weight haha. Two and three plates felt good. I used straps since my one hand was kind of cramping from holding on to the thick dumbbell for so long. Only got two reps with four plates a side but it's definitely a lift I need to work on as most pro card shows seem to have a car deadlift in them. I just kind of felt out the stones today as I knew I wasn't going to be killing it. I worked up to 354lbs for a single with no tacky and then did a somewhat light series. I don't really do series work but I took my time with the loads. I tried a similar series back in February (did 290x2 to 51" instead of 240x1 to 57" and 290x1 to 51") but failed to load the 385lbs to 44" so I guess improvement on that series, especially when I was tired. Joe left after that and I was considering doing the same but I figured I wasn't quite done. I got out the deadlift boxes and used them for a power step. Had to get it just right or the loading pin would knock up the top block. My form actually got better on the last two sets were I'd pull, bring my legs together and shove with it on my thighs with my hips. I felt good for two more if I went all out with 415lbs. Still have room to load it up to 500lbs which is good.

Comments: Pure unadulterated crap. I woke up in a bad mood and the whole day was plagued with seeds of doubt and boy is it tough to uproot those. It took quite a bit of convincing on my part to even workout. I almost fell over on the first set of squats. Right knee was acting up again so I used a knee sleeve for yoke. The only set that was even remotely decent was the last set but it still was freaking tough. In fact the only thing that felt right was the very last set of farmer's and dimels. I was breaking out in a sweat after pretty much every set. Definitely need to rework some things and think some things out as well. Perhaps the yoke and farmers every week is taking too much out of me.

Comments: I haven't done a full range bench in a while so I wasn't sure how it was going to be today. Very light assistance from the reverse bands, only 45lbs. Felt a little sucky on the warm ups but felt pretty good by the end. Made a big PR on these, really psyched as the heaviest set was with 20lbs more than my best bench at the bottom and I had enough speed in the hole to lock out the 365lbs weight at the top. Half presses were tougher than expected. I need to use less weight next time. Rows were a little better than last time but those last six reps are always so dang tough to get. Incline benches were all being used and since my DE UB day has become pretty much all pressing, I decided to switch the rear delts with g-man's. A little tough considering the previous triceps work this week and this workout. Also found out that the big stone I loaded at Jon's on July 24th was actually 435lbs and not 430lbs. Sweet.

Comments: I've felt like I haven't had a good workout since last ME LB day so I wasn't sure what to expect with today. Still making some adjustments I guess. Sweating like mad today. Did my workout at Max Fitness today. They have a deadlift bar so I figured I'd use that today to get used to a bar that has a lot of flex. I knew grip wasn't going to be a problem with the knurling on that bar. Never used a deadlift bar or chains before. Felt good and explosive. Noticed something was a tad off on the set with 455lbs but ignored it. On the set with 495lbs it was very apparent that the bar was throwing me off with the flex off the floor (and the thinner bar). I thought I could correct it on the next set but that didn't happen. Stalled below my knees. I guess I can't do a grip and rip style when it gets heavy or a get screwed up on the bottom of the lift. Took some weight off and set my grip for this attempt and pulled. Definitely reminded me of the hummer tire deadlift event I did about two months ago. Had to hitch it as I was just done by this point. Only took off 60lbs for the down set and got two reps. Knees were bothering me a little but did lunges anyway. Did these with an ssb and did 5lbs more than I have done on a barbell. Hoping to progress up to some big weights over the next few months on both ssb and barbell versions of this lift. The other guys were doing reverse hypers and since they didn't have a way to set up regular hypers like I do at the Y, I joined in as I was curious about this exercise. Never really done it before. They do a bunch of different styles and tonight was momentum stlye I guess. Take a few short swings to get it started and then give it hell. After my first set (didn't feel like much) I said I'd stick with this weight to get used to it. Guess that was a lie as I added quite a bit and that set felt much better. Actually got that "stretch" at the bottom they were talking about. Added more weight for my final set. Not sure what to think about this exercise but it will be something I'll do when I lift there in place of regular hypers. May try out their GHR sometime as well. Abs were tough as their pulldown setup was not a stack but plate loaded. Loaded it up with 145lbs in plate weight and barely got 20 reps the first set and had to fight for all the reps on the other sets. Exhausted after this workout.

Comments: Today kind of sucked. I've taken out walking on my lifting days while I work at this assignment due to the increased walking (pretty much doubled my normal walking). Every set of log pressing it felt like I was growing another skull inside my skull and it wanted to jump out and dance around. With 5-boards, I was kind of hoping that 315lbs wouldn't be so tough for five reps. Messed up on my first set of incline dumbbell presses, almost didn't get five reps on that set. The other sets were better but nothing great. For g-man's I figured I'd rather be pissed with doing crappy with a 10lbs increase than a 5lbs increase. These actually went well. Stretching after that. Sent in my entries for both the American Cup (WNSF) and the Hudson Valley Strongman (NAS).

Comments: I did not feel motivated today so I took it light (mostly) with low volume. Actually had a bit of a workout getting the big stone into the truck before my dad and I went out to Chambersburg. I did part of the medley for an upcoming show that has a keg carry load with power stairs. Since the loading pin setup we have is awful (biceps no likey) I just did the kegs. On the last set, the 300lbs keg rolled back off the platform. You can see why no one uses that platform haha. 350lbs keg is easy to load but incredibly tough to get it stable on my lap since the weight is mostly on one end. I had planned on doing sled pulls to simulate truck pulling but figured hell we got trucks, let's do that. Wasn't too bad, always a plus when I end up using training partners as weights. Now I really didn't want to get into anything like dragging or stone loading so I went with some plate pinches. I have only recently been able to pinch grip a pair of 35lbs plates so I gave them a shot and improved a bit. Before I could just get them up for only a second or two. After that "workout" we weighed the stone. It came out to 452lbs which was way heavier than I was expecting but it's good for me as I wanted a big heavy stone. We'll be sealing it up next weekend. I won't be using it for a while since I got two shows coming up soon. The plan is to get at it hard this week.

Comments: As I said before, I've had to alter my training a little. It's to accommodate a night class I'll be taking in the coming weeks that kind of messes up my training routine days. Today didn't start off well as my right knee was achy and something started to bother my inner left thigh while warming up. I worked through it and tied three therabands around it to compress the area and keep it from being painful. That seemed to work. I wore my hard belt for the squats and that seemed to help quite a bit. I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a lot of unnecessary movements because of my thigh and upperback. Only had an issue on the last set as I got out of position. As I was heading upstairs to do yoke, I noticed my old leather belt and figured I'd give it a try with my other hard belt for double belt yoking. I've seen some people do this I know that Dave Ostlund had done this before. What a difference in core stability. However, my left trap was having none of this yoke business (guess still not 100% from last time) so I had to play around with different positions to keep from bothering it. Farmer's walk actually felt good with the turns the first two sets. I haven't pushed for a heavy weight for this kind of distance with a turn. 216lbs was manageable but the pick was a tad slow. 266lbs was a bear to move around with and I feared not completing with how much the pick got to me. But I made it. Dimels are starting to get tough. Lots of stretching, hope these aches start to clear up soon.

Comments: Some things good, some things kind of meh. My legs were just not helping me today. Could be from the increased amount of walking but more likely from heavy squats. Felt just like that one time I did these but with greater band tension and couldn't even get a 3lbs PR. I felt awkward even unracking the weights and setting up to lift. I missed 205lbs the first try so I knew I was not going to be at my best. 260lbs was my best lift and 275lbs was like a repeat of last time I tried these (but 260lbs was the difficult lift) I called it after those two really tough multi-attempts. Weight felt light on down set but my legs were not helping. I tried to split jerk a fourth but my feet were slow and stupid and I pushed the bar forward so I called that set there. While it was a PR for me, I know I should be good for more as I've done 250lbs with nearly double the band tension. Frustrating and exhausting. Originally my plan was going to be axle cleans starting at 145lbs and work up to 265lbs (slick axle) but said screw it and started at 160lbs. All the sets felt easy. 250lbs was a tad off in that I was half thinking about power cleaning it and half just working the continental. Forgot I was doing continentals for a moment on the last rep with 250lbs actually. Felt like I could have power cleaned (whatever it is I do) it. The big test was going to be 280lbs. No problems, absolutely molested it. Really like using the APT wrist wraps for these as I can get my elbows under it quicker and no wrist pain. Rows were tough, rear delts not so much. Quite a bit of stretching. Realized I had fewer training sessions left for my upcoming contests so I may need to adjust what lifts I'll be doing between now and then.

Walking – 30 minutes

Comments: Too much crap to do after work today so I'll be doing my workout tomorrow. Humidity is a pain. I've been doing another serving of the weight gain stuff (4 a day now) by adding it to my pancake mix. Definitely feels a lot like when I first started eating breakfast again last year in that my body temperature feels warmer in the morning after eating. Then again, it could be from speed walking about a mile to work while it's been so humid. Honestly I sweat if it's above 70 degrees.

Comments: Late start to this workout. Squats felt a tad high to me at the start and I realized it was an inch too high after the set with 395lbs so I decreased it to 17.5". Borderline parallel (maybe slightly above hard to tell from camera angle) height for me. Now I have done lifts from this height in the past but that was when I first started box squats years ago and that's when I did only 335lbs. So I didn't think it was fair to count that as my PR on this lift when I've done so much more from a lower box height as of late. 505lbs was a grinder, came off the box pretty good but really had to fight through the mid point. Felt good to kind of squat over a quarter ton. Hopefully a full squat with 500lbs is coming soon. Now I've done rack suspended goodmornings and I've done ssb goodmornings but never together. Felt good (besides left side of my upperback). Felt good for at least two more reps with 365lbs but figured shutting it down at just three was smarter. Hypers and abs were good. Lots of stretching.

Walking – 30 minutes

Comments: Rough. Terrible weekend for me. I think the only real bright spot for me was eventually getting down to Maryland to see the strongman show on Saturday. What should have been only an hour and a half drive ended up being three hours plus when my GPS died eight miles from the venue and I didn't have a map or directions. I also forgot to bring down the broken circus dumbbell. Took forever to find a restroom too. So I was throughly stressed and exhausted from all the driving that day so I didn't do anything. The next day was worse. I slept in past noon and proceeded to have a pity party, watching over seven hours of anime on my computer. Pathetic I know. My upperback on the left side was tight and out of sorts from heavy yoke. Just very very stressed out. I finally got myself to go for walk around 10:00 to at least do something and that at least helped me relax a little bit. Didn't last long when I got back and started to make my breakfast for the next few days and the damn glass blender falls over into the sink, shatters and cuts my finger. Kind of the final straw as I'm flipping out over stress from so many things; work, school, money, injury, strongman. I was in a bad place. After letting it out, put some icy hot on my back and went to bed. Tomorrow's another day. Maybe it will be better.
